The Copyright Question

It is OK for groups to make recordings of themselves for their own use, including copyrighted material. These are called "archive" copies. The recording can't be used for commercial or fund raising purposes without the music publisher's permission and/or paying a royalty fee. Classical Recording will act as your agent to complete the recording, editing, and duplicating tasks.

Many groups hire instrumentalists for accompaniment. The above rules apply here, too. Paid musicians play for a living and deserve their contract portion of the sales. Officially, only one archive copy is allowed of a performance of union musicians (Local 47 contract rules), though none have complained when archive copies are made for the members of the group being recorded. (I guess they understand the desire we have to hear ourselves!)

As I'm not a lawyer, the above is not legal advice. Any information expanding on or contradicting this is welcome.
